The 8-hour HAZWOPER Refresher course reviews foundational concepts from the initial 24- or 40-hour HAZWOPER training and is vital for workers to maintain proficiency and ensure they follow the most current safety protocols when working with hazardous waste or responding to emergencies. In SCM’s Online HAZWOPER Refresher course, you will:

  • Fulfill the certification requirements outlined in 29 CFR, Part 1910.120, as well as other relevant state regulations for hazardous materials and waste workers.
  • Comprehend various training regulations related to the handling of and response to hazardous materials.
  • Develop knowledge about different types of hazardous materials and the associated hazards and risks.
  • Learn about the routes through which hazardous materials can enter the body.
  • Understand the health effects that exposure to hazardous materials can have on individuals.
  • Familiarize yourself with essential terminology related to hazardous materials, including concepts such as vapor pressure, vapor density, specific gravity, miscibility/solubility, carcinogens, teratogens, mutagens, pH, PPM, etiologic factors, TLV, IDLH, flammable/explosive range, combustibles, flash point, and ignition temperature.
  • Acquire the skills to identify hazards associated with various hazardous materials using systems such as the Department of Transportation (DOT) labeling system, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 704 system, the Hazardous Materials Information System (HMIS), and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Recognize the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with hazardous materials, review of different levels of protection (Levels A, B, C, D), proper selection, limitations of PPE, including respirators, and a review of donning and doffing PPE.
  • Understand the necessity of respiratory protection and the pros and cons of different types of respiratory equipment.
  • Learn about emergency procedures related to hazardous materials incidents and your responsibilities during such emergencies.

👥 Who Must Take the HAZWOPER Refresher?

Any employee who has completed the initial HAZWOPER training (24-hour or 40-hour) and is involved in the following operations must complete the annual refresher:

  • Cleanup operations at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites.
  • Corrective actions involving hazardous waste.
  • Operations at treatment, storage, and disposal (TSD) facilities.
  • Emergency response operations involving releases of hazardous substances.
  • Supervisors and managers who oversee the employees engaged in these operations.
