What’s Right & Wrong?
Can something be right and wrong at the same time? We think so. Look at these two pictures, for example. Can you guess what we think is right and what we think is wrong?
These are pictures taken in the same warehouse. First, the housekeeping in this warehouse is very good. Next, look at the floor in both pictures. There is a clearly delineated aisle leading to an emergency exit. It is easy to keep the aisleway clear in this warehouse because of the yellow and black striping. While aisleways in many warehouses we have visited are not always so tidy and easily seen, we think they should be.
However, those ladders in picture 2 are not secured. 29 CFR 1910.23(c)(7)(ii) states that ladders should be secured so they cannot be accidentally displaced. These ladders are very close to that aisle, where a ladder could fall and become a trip hazard, particularly in the pathway to an emergency exit. It would be better to secure them to prevent an accident.
You may see other good and not-so-good things in these pictures. If you do, please reply to this email with comments. We enjoy interacting with our readers.
