What's Wrong with Cancer? 2/3/14
We are taking a break from our usual monthly picture viewing to highlight a serious issue. If you are like many of us, cancer has touched your life or the life of someone you care about. Tomorrow, February 4, 2014, is World Cancer Day. This year’s theme is to debunk some myths. Here’s their picture, highlighting some common myths:
Here’s one more myth: Cancer is usually caused by occupational exposure. The CDC estimates that only 4 to 10% of occupational exposure leads to a cancer diagnosis (see this link: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/cancer/). Factors such as your age, gender, health habits (alcohol, diet, cigarettes, sun exposure, etc.) are more determining factors than occupational exposure to hazardous materials. You still should be cautious and use all controls to limit exposure at work, AND you should be aware of what causes cancer when not at work!
