February is the traditional American Heart Month so we are devoting our monthly quiz to one of our favorite topics, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). As is our practice, the answers will be at the end of the tip. Check your answers, because if you must do CPR, you want to get it right!

1. Before we do CPR, it is good to know that in most of theU.S., we are protected by a law that says if we are providing care to our level of training, we should not be sued. What is this law called?

 

A. The Good Helper Law.

B. The CPR Provider Law.

C. The Good Samaritan Law.

D. The Davidson Act.

E. Trick question, there is no such law.

2. You just found a coworker on the ground. They are unconscious and not breathing. What should you do first?

 

A. Call 9-1-1 or if someone is around have them call 9-1-1while you start CPR.

B. Yell for the supervisor.

C. Start CPR. Don’t waste time.

D. Ask if a doctor is available.

3. Compressions should be hard and fast. How fast?

 

A. 68 – 80 beats per minute.

B. 80 – 90 beats per minute.

C. 90 –100 beats per minute.

D. 100 –120 beats per minute.

4. Compressions should be deep. How deep?

 

A. ½ inch to 1 inch deep.

B. 1 inch to 1-1/2 inches deep.

C. 1-1/2 to 2 inches deep.

D. At least 2 inches deep.

5. You are starting CPR on the coworker you found unconscious and not breathing. You have a CPR barrier to use as protection. Should you include mouth-to-mouth rescue breaths, or can you just do compressions(hands only)?

 

A. Yes, you should give 2 breaths after every 30compressions.

B. No. You do not have to do mouth-to-mouth breaths anymore.

C. No. Only doctors can do mouth-to-mouth rescue breaths.

D. Yes, you should give 2 breaths every 2 minutes.

Note: If you are uncomfortable with mouth-to-mouth respirations, and do not have a CPR barrier kit handy, hands-only CPR is acceptable.
