In 2026, the focus has shifted toward the complexity of Electrification, specifically handling high-capacity battery storage, EV infrastructure, and the influx of renewable energy integrations.

The Core Focus: NFPA 70E & Human Error

Most professional electrical accidents aren’t caused by equipment failure, but by a lapse in protocol. This month, the ESFI and OSHA emphasize:

  • The Hierarchy of Risk Controls: Prioritizing Elimination (de-energizing) over PPE.
  • Normal Operating Conditions: Reinforcing that equipment is only “safe” if it is properly installed, maintained, used according to manufacturer instructions, and has all doors/covers closed and secured.
  • Human Performance Factors: Addressing how fatigue, complacency, and rushing lead to “short-cutting” safety checks.

2026 Professional Safety Priorities

With the 2026 “Zero Electrocution Challenge” in full swing, the industry is honing in on these high-risk areas:

  • EV Infrastructure: Training for the unique DC arc-flash hazards present in high-speed charging stations.
  • Energy Storage (ESS): Managing “stranded energy” in lithium-ion battery banks that cannot be simply turned off.
  • Qualified Personnel: Ensuring only those with specific training on that specific equipment perform the work.
  • Counterfeit Detection: Rigorous vetting of components to ensure they meet UL/ETL standards, especially with supply chain volatility.
