This month, in our October Safety Tips, we’ve covered Cyber Security Month, Fire Prevention Week, and both Breast and Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Months. Today, October 28, 2024, is National First Responders Day. In honor of our first responders, we are going to cover some information that first responders want you to know. We’ll post the answers at the end, so you can compare to see how well you did.
1. Most first responders want you to know that, when you smell smoke, or see a small fire, the first things you should do is to:
A. Find a fire extinguisher.
B. Shout fire or sound an alarm to get anyone near you and yourself out an exit to a safe place.
C. Pour water on the fire.
D. First call the fire department while watching the fire, then get away from the area of the fire.
2. When calling 9-1-1, what should you tell the dispatcher?
A. Tell them why you are calling, i.e., fire, chemical spill, medical event, etc..
B. Tell them where you are (the address).
C. Tell them who you are.
D. Answer any questions the dispatcher might have.

3. You are the first person to get to the office one morning. A window is broken, and the door is ajar. There may have been a break-in or burglary. What should you do?
A. Go in to see what happened.
B. Go home. You won’t be able to work today.
C. Wait until someone else arrives, then both of you go in.
D. Call 9-1-1. Wait outside until law enforcement arrives and says it is safe to go in.
4. Your office is prepared for emergencies. There is a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, and an automated external defibrillator (AED). You see a coworker laying on the floor, seemingly unconscious. You don’t think the coworker is breathing. What should you do?
A. Check to confirm whether the coworker is unconscious and/or breathing.
B. Call 9-1-1.
C. If you are alone, go get the AED and follow the instructions to use it. Start CPR if indicated.
D. Go get the first aid kit.
E. All the responses are correct.
F. A, B, and C are correct.
5. A coworker’s partner arrives at the workplace, screaming for the coworker to come outside. The partner has what looks like a gun in their hands. You call 9-1-1 and are able to run out a back door. You see law enforcement pulling up outside. What should you do?
A. Listen and follow any instructions the law enforcement officers may have for you.
B. Approach the law enforcement officers with your arms up, hands visible, and fingers spread.
C. Run to the officers and hug them.
D. Try to go back inside to get more people out the back door.
E. Only A and B are correct.
F. Only C and D are correct.
G. None of the responses are correct.
