Feeling Frosty?

In 2023, Tip of the Week

It’s officially winter – or at least it will be later this week. Next Saturday, December 21st will be the official winter solstice – which is the first official day of winter. For those in the Great Lakes and the northeast regions of the U.S., you might think that winter arrived a few weeks ago, as you have already experienced winter storms.

Everyone is experiencing cooler temperatures. Even areas of Florida are experiencing the cold, or at least it is cold for them, to listen to Florida residents. With that in mind, our friends at Ally Safety produced a short, five minute video on cold weather safety tips that we thought was useful. Here’s the video.

COLD WEATHER SAFETY VIDEO

If you can’t view it, some of the main points are these:

  1. Prevent falls on icy surfaces by wearing proper footwear and walking carefully.
  2. Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning by keeping generators, vehicle exhaust systems, and engines in good condition and well-ventilated.
  3. Prevent travel issues by preparing your vehicle for the cold weather.
  4. Prevent frostbite, hypothermia, and bodily heat loss by wearing multiple layers, hats, gloves, and warm shoes and socks.
  5. Moderate alcohol consumption, which can reduce body temperatures, and may impair your judgment about whether you actually are cold.

OSHA also has some tips for staying safe while working in the cold. You can download a pdf of safety tips through this link: https://www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/publications/OSHA3982.pdf
