May is Mental Health Awareness Month.  It’s not something that we often like to talk about, at least not in the workplace, but it has been said that depression and mental illness is one of the top five reasons people take time off from work.  Many of us know someone who is or has been affected by a mental illness.  It is often someone we care about and possibly is even a family member.

 

Mental illness is something that affects us in the workplace.  It is estimated by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that mental illnesses cost U. S. workplaces about $192 billion dollars annually in lost work time.

 

How much do you know about mental health and illnesses?  Our answers and thoughts will be in the column to the left, with some links to help answer any questions you might have.

 

How common are mental illnesses?

  •  Not very common, affecting about 1 in every 1000 adults.
  •  A little common, affecting about 1 in every 300 adults.
  •  Fairly common, affecting about 1 in every 80 adults.
  •  Very common, affecting about 1 in every 10 adults.

 

How prevalent is suicide for the age group 15 – 34?

  •  It is not very common, not in the top 20 leading causes of death.

Can people with mental illnesses get better?

  •  With therapy and medications, people with mental illness can live happy and productive lives, but there are no real cures.

  7.  Talk with them privately, let them know that you care and that they are not alone. Remind them that this is an illness, not a fault or weakness. Offer to help them find professional help.  Learn as much as you can about their illness so that you can be supportive.
