Safety Quiz: Say What?

Have you heard people from an industry other than the one where you work talking about something that is common to them, but to you it sounds like a different language? Us too. At SCM, we try not to use words, phrases, and acronyms that other people may not understand. We try to keep it simple. To use a common (and potentially misunderstood) acronym, we try to “K.I.S.” (keep it simple).

Here’s a few safety-related words, phrases, and acronyms. Test yourself. We’ll include the answers at the end of the quiz.

1. You might have seen the acronym “IDLH” on a safety data sheet (SDS). What does it stand for and what is a brief definition?

 

A. Interim Data for Life and Health: this tells you how many workers have been affected by an exposure to a chemical.

B. Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health: this tells you how exposure to certain airborne contaminants can adversely affect health or may even kill you.

C. Immediate Data for Level of Health: this tells you how healthy you must be to work with a chemical.

D. Internet Data for Level of Health: this is a website where you can find information on chemicals that are safe to work with and around.

E. None of the above.

2. Have you heard someone talk about a being a “competent person?” What does that phrase mean?

 

A. Competent person is a general phrase. It has no specific meaning.

B. A competent person is someone who is generally good at most things.

C. A competent person is someone who can identify conditions in the workplace that are unsafe or could be unsafe and has the authority and ability to fix the unsafe condition.

D. A competent person is someone with a post graduate degree in safety and has experience on the job.

E. None of the above.

3. The word “egress” is in the confined space regulation. What does egress mean?

 

A. Egress is another word for exit, or the way you get out of a building or space.

B. Egress is a type of waterbird.

4. You might hear someone talking about “LOTO.” What are they talking about?
