What’s Right in this Picture?

In 2023, Tip of the Week

If you have been to Great Britain and/or Europe lately, this picture may not be surprising. The Gantt’s took it this past September while in Northern England.

What is good about this picture is more than the door handle, which happens to be a wooden fish. It’s the clear descriptive warning signage for anyone entering this building, which was undergoing some remodeling at the time. You knew that this was a site where you must wear personal protective equipment (PPE), and there was no doubt about what PPE was required.

While we do have warning signage at job sites in the United States, the signs might not be as bright or as well-depicted. The yellow warning was of particular interest. If you can’t read it, it says, “Warning. Dangerous Site. Parents are advised to warn their children of the dangers of entering such sites.” This might be a good warning to put on other job sites. Maybe the warning should extend to employers and employees in addition to parents and children.

While we are looking at signs, here’s an international exit sign. It’s different than the standard signage we in the U.S. commonly see. We’ll talk more about this sign in an upcoming safety tip.

Weekly Safety Challenge:

Should there be a warning sign at the entrance to your jobsite? If so, what should it say?
